ISLANDS

Why romantic travel for happiness?

  • Because there is nothing more romantic and fine, than travel together.
  • Because on the Earth there are places specially created for love where time goes slowly, confusing days, hours and centuries, maps and plans, turning a head and overturning soul.
  • Because in travel feelings and sensuality wake up, and life becomes even finer, the world anew finds bright paints, colored with love.     An idea about travel, sounds like a music, especially when we mentally imagine with what we will have to come into contact in the unknown country, at a distance of thousand kilometers from the native land.
A romantic night impregnated with coniferous, lavender and the Jove knows with what more aromas with the stars scattered on the black sky, such magic that adventures are out of place here, splash of sea waves in the darkness where the beacons wink at boats and mountainous islands darken, salty air, the beloved beside - and you are being lost in a nirvana.
  • These are the ten top islands and beaches in the world where people can sit back, relax, enjoy the sun, and wonder if they really should board that flight home.

    1. The Seychelles
Located off the east coast of Africa, these islands are pure paradise. If anywhere in the world would get me to give it all up and live in a beach hut, the Seychelles. Perfect beaches, perfect water, tons of islands to choose from and all the seclusion you want. The Seychelles are my dream and should be yours too. This group of 115 islands offers everything a beach lover could ask for. Sadly, these islands are pretty expensive but I guess there is a price to pay for paradise. The best time to visit is during the cool season from May to September, when it rains less.

    2.The Maldives
Located in the middle of the Indian ocean, this chain of 1,000 (200 are inhabited, and only 5 have any substantial population) is just a series of coral atolls that are barely above sea level. During the 2004 Tsunami, many of these islands were completely washed away. The government has build flood barriers to help lesson any future tsunamis. These little coral islands are surrounded by excellent diving and snorkeling, white sand beaches, and filled friendly locals. Private resorts litter the islands and a vacation here is also very pricey. However, Bangkok Airways offers cheap flights to and from Thailand. The best time to go to the Maldives is during November to May, when the weather is cool and dry. June through October sees wetter and hotter weather due to the monsoon season.

    3.Ko Lipe
Located in southern Thailand, this semi-off the map island is one of my favorites. Here on Ko Lipe, the super friendly locals bring in the daily catch for amazing seafood as the island’s water is teeming with life. Accommodation is still basic and most places turn off the electricity around midnight. Close to the island is an a little island that provides excellent snorkeling opportunities. You may even spot a few reef sharks. Bathtub warm water and fine sand beaches kept me here for over three weeks. It will do the same for you. Visit during in November or March for the best weather and the fewest people. May through October sees a harsh monsoon season that shuts the island down. (There is a last boat!!). The best way to get there is by boat from Pak Bara.

    4.Bali
This tourist mecca is voted one of the best islands in the world year after year. There’s enough room on Bali for everyone, the surfing is great, the food amazing, it’s dirt cheap, the parties are great, the locals some of the friendliest in the world, there’s a volcano to climb, temples to see- Bali has it all. Bombings in 2004 and 2005 back hurt tourism on the island but the government increased security and there has been few problems since. For those looking for a move active tropical vacation, Bali is the place to go. The weather remains pretty constant all year round, though April to October sees slightly drier weather.

    5.Fiji
Though this country has some 322 islands, less than a third are inhabited. Most of the action happens in western islands but no matter where you go this is heaven. Most young people head to the Yasawa Island group. Anytime the name Fiji is heard, visions of beaches and tropical ocean dance in people’s head. There’s good reason for that- because this place is one of the best places to go in the world and with so many islands, you’re bound to find one you like. It’s a popular destination with young people and honeymooners with something for anyone. The temperature remains mostly constant through the year with cyclones occurring between November and January.

    6.Tahiti
You know those pictures you always see of tropical bungalows in the water? That’s Tahiti. The name has long been synonymous with tropical paradise. One of the biggest honeymoon destinations in the world, Tahiti offers pure paradise and a lot of romance. Here you can relax in the sun, scuba dive, enjoy fine seafood, and take a morning dip right into the water from your bungalow. The island is expensive and caters to a more affluent tourist crowd. The weather is tropical all year round and very humid though May to October sees cooler temperatures.

    7.Big Island Hawaii
Hawaii’s biggest island has everything you could ever want to do and more. But what separates it from the other islands is Volcano National Park. Explore volcanoes, climb through old lava tubes, and watch as new lava oozes into the ocean. Then there’s all the waterfalls on the island too. Big Island has it all. I mean it’s Hawaii- how could you go wrong!? The west season is from October to March though the weather is cooler. However, despite being located near each other, weather conditions on each islands can vary greatly so you never know what to expect!

    8.The Cook Islands
Another south pacific island group (see a pattern here?), the Cook Islands are pretty far off the map. OK, not too far but they are considerably less visited than some of its neighbors. These tiny islands are named after James Cook, the intrepid man who discovered them. With few amenities, this place is the best place to find your inner cast away and escape modern life. The islands see similar weather to the rest of the area with temperatures hot and humid all year round.

    9.Curacao
Located in the Caribbean ocean, this Dutch owned island is prefect. Voted one of the best in the Caribbean, Curacao is like being in tropical Holland. The town is built in the Dutch style but the surrounding areas are all tropical. Hit the beaches, lay in the sun, and party the night away. This may not be Gilligan’s Island but what it lacks in privacy it makes up for in romance and fun. The weather is pretty stable here. It’s always hot and usually sunny. If it rains, it’s between November and January. Don’t worry about hurricanes- it’s below the hurricane belt!

    10.Perhentian Islands
Located on the eastern coast of Malaysia, the Perhentians are two islands. Both are stunning covered with a lot of palm trees, wide beaches, and crystal blue water. There’s not much to do here and visitors typically lay on the beach all day, resting from the night’s drinking before. It’s the perfect place to put up a hammock. A strong monsoon season limits when to go between March and October. During the other times, it’s best to head to Thailand where the weather is nicer.

Ben McKenzie opens window on his world, ‘Southland’

Posted in Uncategorized by onix.gotablog.net on the June 29th, 2009

By Kelley L. Carter, USA TODAY
LOS ANGELES — Ben McKenzie says he doesn’t lead an exciting life.

“I’d be the most boring Twitter-er,” he says with a laugh over breakfast. “I’d be like: ‘At home. Again. Walking my dog. Again.’ ”

The biggest thrill in McKenzie’s life? His new series, Southland, which premieres tonight (10 ET/PT). The NBC midseason replacement is a far cry from The OC, in which McKenzie played Ryan Atwood, a troubled teen in Orange County, Calif., who was given a second chance.

REVIEW: ‘Southland,’ ‘Unusuals’ don’t make the grade

In this new role, he’s Los Angeles Police Department rookie cop Ben Sherman, who goes head-to-head with a by-the-books boss. It’s a different twist on the procedural cop show, because there’s not a crime being solved every week. It’s a raw and uncensored look inside the police unit, but the series also shows the home life of the police, the criminals and the victims.
FIND MORE STORIES IN: California | Orange County | University of Virginia | Los Angeles Police Department | Southland | McKenzie | Cops | Unusuals | Ryan Atwood | Ben Sherman

“I always felt like I was a little out of place on The OC because I was a little bit older and I’d been to college,” says McKenzie, 30, who graduated from the University of Virginia. “Yet, I was doing this show that I was very grateful for and had a great time making, but it didn’t come naturally.

“The thing that’s strange about doing Southland is how bizarrely comfortable it is. I can finally breathe and relax. I’m not so much playing myself, but in a way this character is much closer to myself.”

And stylistically, McKenzie liked that the show’s creators wanted to try something new. The series has a reality-show quality, in the same vein of Cops.

“It doesn’t do any good to try to look backward and duplicate what’s been done before on television. You have to count that people’s tastes have changed, their attention spans have shortened. And you really need to provide them with the immediacy of watching a scripted show that looks more like a real live series of events,” he says.

“Hopefully we can get both the emotional payout of the drama with the authenticity of a cop show.”

McKenzie is single, and taking his time: “It’s more of a concern for my parents. I’m like, ‘First of all, you don’t really want to have a grandkid by me right now. There’s a few steps in that process. You want me to have the girlfriend first, right? Then the wife? Then the kids?’ ” He says he hopes the OC faithfuls follow him to his new series.

“What I really like about the character I’m playing now is that he’s ambitious. He’s a very focused guy who expects a lot out of himself,” McKenzie says, polishing off his breakfast salad. “He’s going to take it and succeed or he’s going to die trying. And I sympathize with that point of view.”

Shocking Pet Food Ingredients - 10 Harmful Ingredients That could Be In Your Pet’s Dinner Tonight

Posted in Uncategorized by onix.gotablog.net on the June 27th, 2009

I knew when I began to check out the types of ingredients in commercial pet foods that I would probably be shocked, but it really is a lot worse than that. In many cases it is down right loathsome, not to mention harmful and unhealthy to our pets. Many foods that have been declared unfit for human consumption are trucked off to pet foodstuffs companies.

Here are 10 common ingredients that could very well be in your pets dinner tonight if you are feeding them a commercial pet eatables product.

    1) Euthanized cats and dogs (including collars, I.D. tags and flea collars, the fur is not removed)
    2) Abed animals
    3) Hydrolyzed poultry feathers - pressure treated feathers from slaughtered poultry
    4) Hydrolyzed trifle - pressure treated hair from cattle, horses, pigs, and other slaughtered animals
    5) Animal blood
    6) Dried poultry wreck
    7) Dried swine waste
    8) Ground almond and peanut shells
    9) A number of leftover parts from slaughter houses such as lungs, spleen and brain, just to name a few
    10) Stick marks - the chunk of physically cut from an animal for human consumption that has been injected with hormones, antibiotics and other drugs

The scary thing is there is a lot more that I have not even listed. Even some commonly added vitamins and minerals have been proven toxic. Quite often the ingredient list is misleading. It’s hard to know what we should feed our dogs if we can not trust what we read on the trade name.

Do you know what a rendering plant is? According to Ann N. Martin author of Food Pets Die For, “Renderers stomach the waste and leftovers from our society. This includes animals picked up by dead stock removal companies; insensate zoo animals, road kill to large to be buried at the side of the road; restaurant and grocery store garbage, including the styrofoam trays and shapeable wrap; and hundreds of thousands of euthanized cats and dogs.” Rendered product is quite common in pet foods. In factors the rendering facilities are often located near the pet food companies. Did you really ever expect it to be that bad? This is truly, truly distasteful.

But you know what? That’s not all. In order to have an almost limitless shelf life, commercial pet food is quite heavily laden with baneful preservatives. Many of these preservatives have been banned from use in human food because they were found to be unhealthy.

A wonderful alternative to commercial pet eats is making your own pet food at home. There are hundreds if not thousands of recipes for pet foods and snacks that you can make in your own kitchen. Many of these homemade pet foods can be made in size, frozen and stored for ease of use.

Considering all the unconditional love we receive from our pets don’t we, at the very least, owe them a healthy dinner? They’ll be happier, healthier and glowing longer. Besides we’ll save all kinds of money on vet bills.

IMF and World Bank Spring Meetings to Discuss Emergency Aid for Developing Countries

Posted in Uncategorized by onix.gotablog.net on the June 24th, 2009

    By William Eagle
    Washington, DC
    20 April 2009

Next weekend, financial officials from around the world and development NGOs will be in Washington for the 2009 Spring Meetings of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund. Among the topics will be how best to apply the one trillion dollars allocated by G-20 leaders last month to the IMF.

For development groups, the meetings are a time to discuss some of the unfinished business of the G-20. Last month in London, ts leaders pledged one trillion dollars to the IMF for loans and other assistance to help cushion the developing world from the effects of the global financial crisis.

But some questions remain. Activists say, for example, that the G-20 promised 100 billion dollars for multilateral institutions like the African and Asian Development Banks but did not specify where the money would come from.

    Special Drawing Rights

They also want clarification on how proposals made by the G-20 would work. One is the issuing of $250 billion dollars worth of the IMF reserve currency, called Special Drawing Rights, or SDRs, to nations needing funding against the effects of the global financial downturn. SDRs, which are worth about $1.50 (or one British pound) can be exchanged for the leading currencies, including the dollar, the euro and the yen. It’s estimated that nearly 19 billion dollars would go to low income countries under the plan and 60 billion to middle income countries like Mexico and Brazil.

The IMF would distribute SDRs to states according to the size of their voting shares within the institution.

Soren Ambrose is the development finance coordinator for ActionAid International, based in Nairobi. He says bigger industrialized economies, which have a larger percentage of votes on the IMF’s executive board, would receive more SDRs than poorer countries.

    Soren Ambrose of ActionAid
    Soren Ambrose of ActionAid

“What that member country can do with [the SDR’s],” he explained, “is withdraw the money and cash it in for real currency. The only thing they have to pay on that is a regular interest charge to the IMF as a fee for the conversion of the currency. They must keep paying that fee on an annual basis until they replenish the [loan].

” So, the SDRs are a good idea that should be moved on quickly. [They] would be even better if rich countries who will [receive more SDRs] could transfer the rights to the countries that need it most [instead of using it themselves].”

The G-20 also agreed to sell over 400 tons of the IMF’s gold reserves. The move is expected to yield up to 11 billion dollars, with a portion going to help finance developing countries

But what has not yet happened is setting up the complicated vehicles inside the institution to convert that gold and the proceeds from selling it into money for low income countries.

According to Ambrose, “At this point in time, they are only allowed to use the money for IMF purposes, to pay IMF staff or replenish accounts for [administrative] use. This could be taken care of easily at the Spring Meetings of the IMF…. [IMF officials] could get together and say ‘we are writing a new rule on how these gold proceeds can be used’, but no one has taken the initiative to start to make that happen.”

    Flexible Credit Line

The IMF also has a program called the Flexible Credit Line, which grants emergency loans to countries with strong financial track records. Borrowers would not be required to make IMF-mandated changes to their economic policies. They could also have access to unrestricted renewals and up to five years to repay the loans. But development specialists are concerned that the money will go only to medium-sized economies and bypass the poor countries that need help the most.

Jesse Griffiths of the Bretton Woods Project
Jesse Griffiths of the Bretton Woods Project

Jesse Griffiths is the coordinator of the Bretton Woods Project, an NGO that acts as a watchdog to scrutinize and influence the World Bank and imf in their efforts to help developing countries and protect the environment.

“The problem,” he said, “is which countries will be able to access this credit line. [So far, it is] only the ones IMF says are [deemed] stable enough like Mexico, and Poland, but is not likely the IMF will allow the poorest countries to access the flexible credit line. Instead they will extend traditional IMF lending [practices] which come with austere conditions.”

The IMF says it has introduced reforms called stand-by arrangements (SBA) that would provide flexibility in lending to poorer countries, but Griffiths says they too would come with preconditions not imposed on wealthier states.

    GRANTS OVER LOANS

At the spring meetings, many development activists will push for the IMF and World Bank to issue funds to poor countries as grants rather than loans, which they say could lead to a second debt crisis in Africa. Today Africa owes about $400 million dollars to donors, though relief efforts have alleviated the debt of several of the continent’s poorest countries.Activists are also encouraging IMF and World Bank leaders not to link new funds to austerity measures normally prescribed for borrowers, like cuts in public spending and an increase in interest rates. They say the measure would likely lead to cutting the safety net to the poor and to deeper recessions. Instead, they want to maintain or increase social spending in areas like education and health care.

Not Quite an American Sweep at the Rolex FEI World Cup Finals

    Rolex FEI World Cup Finals

    Rolex FEI World Cup Finals

LAS VEGAS — The dream of an American sweep at the last Rolex FEI World Cup Finals to be held in the U.S. for years fell short of reality Sunday, as even two perfect rounds over the fences couldn’t enable McLain Ward to take the international indoor show jumping title.

Ward, the Olympic double gold medalist from New York, was not quite as fast as Germany’s Meredith Michaels Beerbaum in the first leg of the competition at the Thomas & Mack Center on Thursday night, and that proved to be the difference that gave her a third World Cup title.

Like Ward, who rode Sapphire, Beerbaum and her 16-year-old equine partner, Shutterfly, were penalty-free in the two-round power jumping finale before a vocal crowd of 7,497. Beerbaum retained the two-penalty lead over Ward that she carried into the class, but the world’s number-one ranked rider called her triumph “the hardest win I’ve ever had.”

Ward had worked on a plan since last year to be the first American show jumper since 1987 to earn the title. It could have been quite a coup if he emulated the achievement of his countryman, Steffen Peters, who took the Dressage World Cup honors Saturday night.

“I certainly would have liked to have won, but I’m proud of what my team, my horse and myself did,” said Ward. “We did the best we could, and 99 percent of the time, we would have won.”

The only other American to finish in the ribbons was Ward’s 2004 and 2008 Olympic teammate, Beezie Madden, 12th on an up-and-coming mount, Danny Boy. Third place went to the Netherlands’ Albert Zoer on Oki Doki, who stalked the leaders throughout the competition.

Since 2003, the Cup finals had been held every other year in Las Vegas, but because of the economy, the organizer withdrew bids for 2011 and 2013. It was announced after the show, however, that a bid will be put in for 2014.

KKR & Co, Henry Kravis and George Roberts’ private equity firm, swung to a loss last year as leveraged buyouts dried up amid the credit crisis.

The New York-based firm had US$1.2 billion in losses compared with pretax economic net income of US$815 million the previous year, KKR said in a presentation to investors late on Sunday. The loss is the firm’s first in at least five years.

KKR, Blackstone Group LP and rival leveraged buyout firms have struggled to finance acquisitions in the past 18 months after the credit crisis shut off the debt financing they rely on to finance their takeovers.

A lack of credit for acquisitions by potential acquirers and scant appetite for initial public offerings are preventing LBO firms from selling their holdings.

KKR’s assets under management shrank by 11 percent to US$47.3 billion at the end of March, KKR said.

The firm is preparing to merge with its publicly traded European fund, KKR Private Equity Investors LP.
